Appel Presents... P.O. Box #33083, San Diego, California 92163
Editors Note

Dear Readers, in the following days, SD Theater-goers will have their mega-Broadway show appetite focused, on not one - but TWO productions of the beloved LES MISERABLES.  One, the CCT's current presentation of LES MIZ (below) at their Mt. Helix Amphitheatre - and next week - the opening of Lamb's Players new production of  LES MIZ - ummm such an abundance of riches!

An advance commentary from reviewer Rosemarie Ballard.  If you like the show Les Miserables,  this performance by CCT on the top of Mt Helix, is a must attend in my opinion.  I do not believe, you will ever hear it sung more beautifully. The entire program gave me 'goosies' ... and some tears.  Matthew Posner as Jean Valjean, absolutely impressed my entire self.  In every scene, he rates a 10.  His voice is blessed by the voice God - and his acting is so intense and believable. The entire cast is a STAND OUT!  Brianna Hertzberg  as Fantine,  and Kelly Prendergast as Cosette, have awesome voices - as well as all the other artists in the production.  Get a glimpse of the show on their site -  and you will get an idea of the commitment of this dedicated cast.  Get a ticket, take a picnic, and some warm, comfortable clothes - to the top of Mt. Helix ... and enjoy  Les Miserables. -  (the full review to appear in our next issue).

Further, VANGUARD Theatre Presents ...

We have also heard from our friends at the VANGUARD Theatre - not to forget their current  production of the SOUND OF MUSIC at the Westminster Presbyterian Church (at 3598 Talbot Street, at Canon) ... in Point Loma.

Performances of SOUND OF MUSIC, run from July 17 - 27th (at 8pm).  Also, at their Church Amphitheatre, the VANGUARD will be offering a  MUSIC AT DUSK Series (at 6:30pm) - featuring Peter Spraque (on July 21st)Fred Beneditti (on July 28th)Billy Hawkins & Band (on Aug 4th),  Pacific Sound Brass (on Aug 11th) and Matrix (on Aug 18th) ... sounds terrific!  Not to be missed .... for further information, contact ...

CIRCLE CIRCLE DOT DOT,  will offer the RED PLANET RESPITE (on Sept 12-28th) ... SAN DIEGO, I LOVE YOU 3.O (in February, 2015), and WILD CALIFORNIA (in May / June, 2015) - featured during their Residency at the La Jolla Playhouse.
Family of ... Circle Circle Dot Dot 2

Further, "Bonus Off-Season Productions" ... NAUGHTY or NICE? (in December, 2014), and INSPIRED COMMUNITY: a New Play Festival ... in April, 2015.   Circle Circle dot dot has spent the past three years producing original, critically-acclaimed productions on a shoestring budget. Imagine the amazing things they might do with some extra financial support?  With the launch of their La Jolla Playhouse Residency, and their 4th Season of productions - they could really use the support of you, their beloved patrons!  So, for the next 30 days we're hosting a 10K or Bust! Fundraising Campaign - where you can receive handsome incentives (as well as a tax write-off) ... for a charitable donation.  For further information, contact ...

From our colleague Paul Taylor, the Managing Director of The DESERT ROSE Playhouse (in Rancho Mirage, California) - the Valley’s live stage company serving the LGBT and gay-friendly communities, is presenting their annual fundraiser event MIXED PLATE ... on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 7 pm.
   Desert Rose Playhouse

MIXED PLATEis just as it sounds – an eclectic variety show featuring the talents of performers who have worked with the Desert Rose Playhouse - in some capacity, since the company was founded in 2010.  These include:  celebrated cabaret performers Francesca Amari and Doug Graham, actor/dancer John Ferrare, actor/singer Andrew Knifer, stage manager/singer Lin Gillham, actor/singer Alan Denny, and 14-year-old actor/singer Garrett Hoy.  Hoy, was featured in the first DRP production of FALSETTOS and is soon to be featured in the 2014-15 season opener ANITA BRYANT DIED FOR YOUR SINS.  Also appearing will be the Hula Me Kala Dance Troupe ... from Cathedral City.  For further information, call (760) 202-3000, or go online at ...

And finally, please join the Mojalet Dance Collective, a rare opportunity to see two beautiful works of  DANCE,  presented in an intimate space - with a cast of outstanding dancers!  Betzi Roe's lovely 2011 "Floodplain", performed by the Mojalet Dance Collective - deals with the fertile tracts of land, bordering rivers - prone to devastating flooding; and Sadie Weinberg's "Happiness: An Experiment", from the 2014 ARTS FEST - investigates clips of personal, non-linear storytelling - that engages audiences through participation and reflection.

Go see these super dancers, at the VINE THEATRE, at the Bernardo Winery (13330 Paseo de Verano North) on August 2nd (2pm & 7pm), and August 3rd (at 2pm).  For further information, call (858) 243-1402, or go online at

    James Colt Harrison

We are pleased to share with our readers, that our SDTR Columnist Interviewer James C. Harrison, has been the occasional guest film reviewer and film historian (for now 7-years) on MOVIE ADDICT HEADQUARTERS on Blog Talk Radio (on Tuesdays at 1pm) - which  celebrated its own 7th Anniversary Show.  Out of the top ten shows of the Year,  James came in as Most Popular & Most Listened-to Show, for two out ten shows!  James was ranked # 4, with Rita Moreno and Robert Osborne - and # 2 for "Hollywood or Bust" - a new book review and interview with the author - so, out of 52 shows per year they do, they have 263,000 listeners around the world .... James  DID WELL (...and he is very big in Botswana!).

We also deeply regret the 'passing' of Broadway star-of-stars ELAINE STRITCH (at 89), at her home in Michigan this past week.  As one of Sondheim's favorite divas,  Elaine will always be remembered for her "The Ladies Who Brunch...".   We will MISS you Elaine!
